There are wonderful aspects to working in an all female department. I adore my museum coworkers and almost always love working in such a caring and nurturing group. Then there are days like today when the whole department has seized on the idea of playing matchmaker for me. I don't think I'm going to be able to show my face in the security office for the next few weeks without getting comments.
A little background to this...
The second shift security guards are an interesting group. Basically, they get really bored and will do just about anything to amuse themselves since the museum is closed for most of their shift. One of them, Don, has been 'adopted' by our staff so he spends most of his time wandering around the Natural History Museum talking to us (and listening to us rant and being nagged by us about various things). As soon as he and I started talking, we realized that we are very, very alike. He larps and roleplays. He's a Renn Faire junkie and an internet addict. He owns four swords. He can quote sci fi movies. He has the same religious views as me (big thing I'm looking for now). He's also single and an incredibly sweet guy. And makes killer brownies, which he brings to me when I'm working close at the cave.
All of this would have been quite enough to cause me to notice him without any outside help. So I've been more flirty than usual, and stayed for most of his shift last Friday getting a tour of the museum and just getting to know him.
Unfortunately, the fact that there's a bit of chemistry between us hasn't gone unnoticed by the reast of the museum. I have had three separate girls from MNH go up to either him or me in the past week and say something to the effect of "You need to go out with Don/Emily. Soon." It was really bad today because Nissa had just noticed and spent at least an hour badgering us. And I mean really badgering. She walks up to Don at the Cave and (in front of one of the lab rats) says "You should go out with Emily. What are you doing tonight?" Both he and I turn very interesting shades of red and then have to point out that yes, indeed we have discussed this subject... As has every other person in MNH, security, and the great majority of the lab rats (Youth volunteers, if I haven't explained that before).
Have I mentioned how much I dislike people meddling in my life? My parents are acceptable because I have no way around it. Anyone else needs to let me conduct my affairs as I see fit.
End mini rant.
Basically, to sum up, Emily is quite happy, so she is choosing to whine about small things. A happier entry shall be next.^_^
